A cross-platform media publishing technology by Microsoft, positioned as an alternative to Adobe's Flash.

[edit] Overview

Silverlight is a cross-platform, cross-browser plug-in for streaming video, games and other multi-media content. On the hosting side, Silverlight is available for both Windows Server and Linux. On the end-user side, Silverlight supports Windows (IE and Firefox) and Mac (Safari and Firefox).

Silverlight Streaming is a free service (up to 4 GB) for hosting Silverlight content and applications on Microsoft's servers, distributed around the globe - so that your content is cached at various locations. Silverlight Streaming promises to provide true streaming - as opposed to progressive download when media continues to download ahead of what the user is actually watching, which results into bandwidth overuse if the user decides to stop viewing in the middle of the clip (for reference see this forum post).
